Formats

Form and Function.  My design professors were forever repeating that form should always follow function and I had another reminder of it just the other day.  A fellow game designer and I were talking about The Sylvan and he mentioned that while he loves the spread format, that one of the big complaints he hears is that spreads are not great for folks playing on mobile devices.  I had to laugh.  I spent two weeks agonizing over the decision on whether to present The Sylvan in it's spread format (like it was designed) or in a single page format.

Ultimately, I should have asked more people about it because I chose to present the game the way it would look if printed and didn't properly consider that people might be playing on phones or tablets.   So, if you have purchased a copy of The Sylvan and then said "aw man!  Not spread format!" let me know.  I can send you a PDF with individual pages.

Lessons learned here:  Future games should be designed to work both as old-school, I'm-gonna-print-this-out format (at heart, I'm kind of of a Luddite) and also work just as well as a single page, I'm-playing-from-my-phone design.

I'm also writing FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION on the frame of my computer screen.  Sorry for forgetting, Professor Ghiz.
